Head of department

Hryhoriy Krynytskyy, Prof., Dr. Sc. ( Biological Sciences)

The Department of Silviculture was founded in 1856 as a part of the Arable Farming  School in the settlement of Dubliany , near Lviv.

Further development of the Department is connected with the Regional School of Forestry which was founded in 1874. In the 1980’s, the school received the status of Higher Forest School and the Department of Silviculture was established at this school. In different years, the Department was headed by professors  J. Gebenstreit, V. Tenetsky, G. Strzelecki, J. Demyanovsky, S. Sokolovsky.

In 1919, the Arable Farming Academy (reorganized Arable Farming School) and the Higher Forestry School were attached to the Lviv Polytechnic and an Arable Farming-and-Forestry faculty was established on their basis. The Department of Silvuculture  became one of the departments at this faculty.

The Department of Silvuculture was located at 1 Olga Kobylyanska street, occupied four rooms there, had a large library (more than 1,400 pulications), and 6 hectares of forest area was  transferred into its ownership for practical training and research.

In 1920-1928,  Head of the Department was professor O. Bervid, a graduate of the Vienna Forestry Academy. He focused on practical training of students.

 In 1928, K. Sukhetsky was appointed the Head of the Department, he held the chair until 1939.

After the West Ukrainian lands entered the Ukrainian SSR, the Department of Silviculture functions as part of the Lviv Polytechnic from September 1939 to July 1941, and during the period of German occupation from 1942 to 1944.

After the restoration of the Soviet regime in Lviv and the Lviv Polytechnic Institute, the Department of Silviculture resumed its work. The Department was headed by Acad. P.Pogrebnyak (concurrently). In 1946, the LPTI Arable Farming-and-Forestry faculty was transformed into the Lviv Agricultural Institute (LAI), assoc. prof. (later professor) M. Gorshenin became the Head of the Department  of  Silviculture.

In 1946, the Forestry Institute  was organized in Lviv – the Lviv Forestry Institute. In 1949, the Faculty of Forestry with two departments was founded within the Institute: the Department of Botany and Soil Science, and the Department of Silviculture, Inventory and Geodesy (since 1950 -  the Department of Silviculture and Forest Protection) which was headed in different years by: assoc. prof. F.Volkov (1949-1950), assoc. prof. Halyna Tyshkevych (1950-1952), assoc. prof.  O. Kvitsinsky (1952-1954).

In 1954, the Faculty of Forestry of the Lviv Agricultural Institute  was transferred to the Lviv Forestry Institute; the Forestry faculties of the two educational institutions were combined into one, respectively, and two departments of silviculture were united. The head of the single department of silvuculture became prof. M. Gorshenin. From 1980 to 1983, the duties of the Head were performed by assoc. prof. L. Polovnikov, from 1983 to 1988, the Department was headed by assoc. prof. V. Kucheriavyy.

In 1988, the Department of Silviculture was merged with the Department of Inventory, Forest Management and Geodesy. It was headed by assoc. prof. M. Goroshko. In 1994, the Department of Silviculture was restored as a separate structural unit at the Faculty of Forestry.

Since 1994, the department was headed by prof. H.Krynytskyy, Doctor of Biological Sciences. In 2015-2016  the duties of the Head of the Department were performed by assoc. prof.  V.Pavliuk, and in 2017 the chair was held by prof. PhD. V. Lavnyy. In terms of science, the Department supports the introduction in Ukraine of selection system, close-to-nature forestry and the development of a new multifunctional model of forest management by types of forests and forest management, taking into account landscape and basin (watershed) principles, which integrates social, environmental and economic management goals. The model provides for an increase in the forest cover of the territory, an increase in the biotic stability and productivity of the stands, leveling the age structure of the forests, a clarification of the age of main felling in accordance with the principles of managing by the target programs, the efficient use of stands excluded from the final cutting, an increase in the volume of timber harvesting while preserving the protective functions of forests, rational use of wood.

Taking into account the scientific achievements, the main lines and priorities of the research activities of the Department are defined:

  • methods and technologies for conversion of even-aged stands into mixed all-aged stands with a complex spatial structure based on natural regeneration in order to switch from a clear-cutting system of forest management to selection system, close to nature;
  • forest-physiological and genetic-breeding basis for the cultivation of highly productive, biotically resistant stands;
  • genetic potential of populations of major forest-forming species of Ukraine, its conservation and rational use;
  • pathological processes in Ukraine’s forests and development of regional forest-protection systems;
  • rational reproduction and use of resources of the hunting game fauna.

       In order to conduct research according to the defined areas, the Department set up a number of research-and-production permanent areas in the state forestry enterprises of Lviv and Ternopol regional forestry and hunting departments.

To train highly qualified forestry specialists, organize large-scale scientific and production experiments and deepen scientific research, the Department of Silviculture closely cooperates with the institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, sectoral research institutes of the State Forestry Committee of Ukraine and state forestry enterprises. The scientists of the Department also maintain creative relations with scientists from Poland, Slovakia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, England, France, Belarus, Moldova, Romania and several other countries.

In the future, it is planned to expand stationary forest-physiological and genetic-breeding studies of highly productive, biotically resistant forest phytocoenoses on the basis of close-to-nature forestry, intensification of work on theoretical analysis and generalization of the obtained research results concerning the formation and functioning of forest phytocoenoses, updating the material and technical base of research on woody plants.

The begging of the Department of Wood-Based Composites, Cellulose and Paper  have been started from the Department of Joiner-Mechanical and Plywood Manufacturing, created at the Faculty of Mechanical Technology of Wood (1947-1953). From 1953 to 1975, the disciplines related to wood composite materials were studied at the Department of Woodworking Design (1953-1970), renamed from 1970 to the technology of wood products. In 1975, the Department of Hydrothermal Processing of Wood and Glued Materials was established, which in 1986, as a structural unit, was liquidated, and in 1994 it was re-established, in which sections of hydrothermal processing of wood and glued materials technology were already functioning.

In June 1, 1999 specialty "Chemical Technology of Wood and Vegetable Raw Materials Processing"  in the Faculty of Woodworking was opened and It was caused to creation of the graduating department "Chemical technology of wood processing and safety of life". On July 1, 2001, two departments were created with the reorganization of this department: chemical wood processing technology and life safety.

On January 29, 2010, the department was named “Wood-Based Composites, Cellulose and Paper”, which became fully reflective of both the educational and scientific directions of the activity of the graduating department. It is the only department in Ukraine that provides training in the specialization "Technology of wood boards and plastics".

The Department of Forest Planting operates at the University since 1951 under the name “Department of Forest Planting and Soil Science”. Over the next fifty years, the department had some reorganization changes. In its current form, the Department of Forest Planting and Forest Breeding has been operating since 1st of July 2000. The department consists of a section of forest planting (2 professors, 3 associate professors, 1 senior lecturer) and a section of forest breeding (2 associate professors). The department has a research laboratory for forest genetics and an educational research and production laboratory of modern technologies of forest cultural production.

The main research area of the department is the search of a solution of theoretical and applied problems of increasing the productivity of the economic and environmental value of artificial afforestation in the field of forest planting. During the formation of the department (1951-1963), the research work was carried out under the leadership of head of the department assoc. M.I.Kaluzhsky. On the issue of creating highly productive, valuable and fast-growing crops in Western Ukraine, prof. M.Kh. Osmola, assoc. T.M. Brodovich, assoc. E.I. Zhuravska, assistants M.I. Yuzkiv, V.P. Lavrov. The possibilities of mechanizing forestry works were studied by M.I. Kaluzhsky and E.V. Vitvitsky, the author of the original construction of a motor-drill for mountain conditions.

During 1963-1973 under the guidance of prof. G.O.Kharitonova considerable work was carried out to determine the optimal doses and efficiency of various types of herbicides and the technology of their use for caring for forest crops. Assoc. O.S. Melnik studied soil erosion and developed land reclamation measures in the northern part of the Volhynian-Podolian Upland. Since 1966, the Department has been practicing the wide attraction of students to scientific work by organizing research expeditions. Such work has gained particular intensity since 1970 on the initiative of then head of the department, assoc. M.I. Kalinin. With the participation of students, under the guidance of teachers and employees of the department, from one to three scientific expeditions were organized annually, consisting of 18-25 students. The scientists of the department during this period developed topics on the introduction of hazelnuts, walnuts, edible chestnuts in forest crops and planting.

Since 1980, begins the development of the technology of firmness of forests to winds in the Carpathians.

During 1973-1988, forest planting studies are carried out under the guidance of prof. M.I. Kalinin. This period, under his leadership, formed a new scientific direction - forest rooting, the subject of study of which is the patterns of development and formation of root systems of the main forest-forming species in clean and mixed stands in a wide age range with the aim of creating a scientifically based base for increasing forest productivity. In practical forestry, recommendations are applied on the creation of firmness of forests to winds in mountainous conditions, the cultivation of stands on the principles of forest change, etc. In 1992 was introduced a new discipline “Forest root knowledge” into the training program for forest planting students. Within the framework of the direction, three doctoral and ten candidate dissertations were prepared and defended, 7 monographs were published, 4 studies 4 textbooks and 5 study guides, 4 copyright certificates and a patent for an invention were obtained, more than 250 scientific articles were published.

Staff of the department teach students of forestry faculty, part-time students, students of faculty of pre-university and postgraduate training the following disciplines: forest genetics, forest planting, forest breeding, forest melioration, modern technologies of forest cultural production.

The educational process is fully provided with textbooks, teaching aids and lecture notes published by the scientific and pedagogical specialists of the department.

  • Forest  selection  with the basics of genetics (Associate prof. Mykola Lisovyi).

Modern scientific researches of the scientific and pedagogical staff of the department is concentrated within the priority area of development of science and technology of Ukraine "Environmental Protection".

The research of scientific and pedagogical staff focused on solving the following problems:

  1. Selection basis of the reproduction of the genetic potential of Gymnospermae

 and Angiospermae of wood introducers by in vitro reproduction.

  1. Development of technologies for accelerated growth of wood pulp in plantations based on the use of plant growth regulators.
  2. Researching of the productivity of coniferous and deciduous introducers in artificial forest plantations of the Western region of Ukraine.
  3. Research of main features of growth and development of promising new species of forest introducers.
  4. Research of main features of the growth and development of planting material of forest and ornamental species in open and closed ground conditions.
  5. Research of main morphological and stereometric features of the structure of the root systems of the main forest-forming species of woody vegetation.

0112U003031. Morphophysiological and genetic-population bases of the formation of a forest management system in Ukraine approximate to nature.

Project deals with the features of stem wood growth and accumulation by artificial plantings of the studied species — prototypes of plantation forest plantations. The forms of spruce, larch and Pseudotsuga behind the bark, branching, and the form of seed scales in relation to forestry-taxation indicators in pure and mixed stands were studied. The course of growth of conifers by medium models, the onset of the period of their quantitative ripeness, and the dynamics of the media are studied the dynamics of the average increment of wood during the age periods in the sugars and chest of the Western Forest-Steppe and adjacent territories.

The conceptual foundations of a cyclic method of growing plantation forest plantations on the basis of breed mines are developed. The principles of site selection, methods of processing and use of planting material are given. A technology has been developed for the creation, cultivation and operation of plantation stands. The volumes of wood pulp production in the age range are calculated, the age of the main forest plantations cutting is justified.

The expediency of transferring to a limited area of the forest fund (20%) to targeted wood cultivation for industrial needs has been proved. In this regard, in the territory of the Western Forest-Steppe in the appropriate types of forest conditions it is advisable to create annually forest plantations on 0.5% of the forested area (4.2 thousand ha).

0115U002318. Development of technology for accelerated growth of wood pulp in plantations based on the use of plant growth regulators.

The effect of a number of plant growth regulators (PGR) at various doses of their application on the accelerated production of high-quality gardening material has been clarified; the influence of certain elements of the technology of creating artificial stands on the reduction of the timing of the production of wood phytomass for industrial needs and as a regenerative energy source has been studied; the feasibility of partial replacement of fossil fuels with wood raw, which is restored at certain (relatively short) time intervals, is substantiated; it is indicated that the introduction of energy plantations from willow and poplar will allow rational use of waterlogged lands.

Was established resource potential of plantation forest stands with the participation of fast-growing species - Picea abies [L.] Karst., Larix decidua Mill., Larix kempferi Carr., Quercus borealis Michx., and clones of poplar (MAX-4, MAX-5, Oxford, AF2, AF8).

0117U002336. Development of a system of cyclic plantation forest growing for accelerated wood production based on forestry close to nature.

A conceptual approach to the cultivation of wood in plantations based on the principles of breed mowing, focused on intensive forest cultivation with the rational use of natural potential forces of nature, is proposed. He is ready to obtain significant volumes of wood in a relatively short time without the use of expensive methods of forest cultivation and partial cost recovery due to intermediate use.

The resource potential of plantation forest stands with the participation of rapidly growing species - Larix decidua Mill., Larix kempferi Carr., Larix eurolepis H., Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco, as well as species and clones of willow and poplar - Salix purpurea L., S. triandra L., S. viminalis L., Tordis (S. schwerinii × S. viminalis), Inger (S. triandra x S. viminalis), Populus deltoides x Populus piramydalis.

Head of the Department,
Ph.D., Assoc.Prof.
Oleg Styranivsky,

Department of Forest Machines (FM) comes from Department of Land and Water Timber Transport and Traction Machines, which was created at the same time as Lviv Forestry Institute in 1945. First head of that department was Assoc. Prof. V. I. Garuzov, director of the Institute. In 1955 Assoc. Prof. B.G. Gastev became the head of FM Department. Under his leadership, the scientific direction of the timber transport machines dynamics was formed, which gained wide recognition in the scientific world.

From 1969 to 1985 the department was headed by the Prof. Gastev’s learner – Assoc. Prof. M. A. Gaidar, who published the first Ukrainian-language textbook on timber transport.

In 1988 FM Department was merged with Department of Forestry Mechanization. After its restoration in 1994, it was headed by Prof. N. I. Byblyuk, which successfully develops scientific direction, started by Prof. Gastev. On the basis of the perennial theoretical and experimental researches, the methodology of the imitation modeling and calculation processes timber vehicles movement with taking into account the tree trunks package three-dimensional oscillation was developed in 1970-80 at the department.

Under Prof. Byblyuk guidance the exploratory research on the timber truck environmental problems were launched, which has led to formation of the new scientific direction – environmental forestry technologies.

Beginning in 1995, under Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine license, the FM Department provides practical training for students to provide the working profession vehicles driver categories "B" and "C".

At the end of 2015, Department of Forest Machines was headed by Prof. Byblyuk’s learner – Assoc. Prof. O. A. Styranivsky, which continued the earlier scientific directions.

Since 2008, Industrial Scientific Research Laboratory of Forest Roads and Forest Vehicles has been operating on FM Department basis. • Dynamics of forest machines: creation of the theory and the methods of the calculation, testing and efficient operation for the wheel forest vehicles; mathematical and computer modeling of dynamic processes.

A new approach to the study of the processes of forest vehicles movement is proposed, which is to consider the tasks of simulation modeling and calculation of the parameters of the movement of the system road-operator-machine-wood package on a single theoretical basis, based on the establishment of internal relationships between different dynamic processes that arise during the movement of various types of the forest vehicles. On this basis, a mathematical model of the generalized timber's transporting system was created, which was oriented towards a complex study of the main types of movement. For practical implementation of the developed mathematical apparatus, algorithms and programs for calculating the motion parameters of the individual subsystems and the timber’s transporting system as a whole have been drawn up.

  • Environmental forestry technologies: the minimizing of the forest's machines impact on the environment, the creation of the wood transport development concept of   the forests, forest roads designing.

A new scientific direction at the technical and environmental sciences boundary. It based on the joint application of engineering and environmental methods, use the quality and quantity technical parameters of the technology processes of forest vehicle for evaluation their environmental impact.

For the first time, the GIS-based forest road planning conceptual model has been proposed. That one allows for the justify the ecologically safely and cost-effective manners of the wood primary transporting, for the estimation the proportions of the forest road network development for the different terrestrial technical means, and also for describing a possible occurrence, increasing and expansion of the environmental hazards caused by logging activities.

  • Energy approach scientific principles in the solution of the problems of interaction the machines with working environment

The application of the methodology of variational inequalities for exergy and anergy in the study of the behavior of the “machine - working environment” system is substantiated, analytical solutions for the number of practically important problems for the machine’s elements and work environment interaction are obtained, methods for determining the operational characteristics of mobile machines and mechanisms with asymmetrically located hinged equipment in pliable  territories have been developed.
